Misty City Software was founded in Seattle in 1986 by Wendell Brown, a high school Physics and Computer Programming teacher. Initially, Grade Machine was produced for the Apple II and DOS-based computers.

In January of 1990, Misty City released the Macintosh version of Grade Machine. Following an extremely favorable product review in Macworld magazine, in which Grade Machine earned a 4-star rating, product sales increased dramatically. In late 1995, Grade Machine for Windows was released and was received with overwhelming approval. In 2001, the Misty City Support Website was chosen by the Association of Support Professionals (ASP) as one of the year's winners in its fourth annual "Ten Best Web Supported Sites" competition, a prestigious awards event that honors Web-based tech support for software and other technology.
